İzmir is one of the oldest settlements of the Mediterranean basin. The archeological excavations done in the Yeşilova Höyük by a team of archaeologists from İzmirs Ege University indicate three levels. Two of these are prehistoric - the second level shows traces of early to mid-Chalcolithic, and the third level indicating Neolithic settlements. These levels would have been inhabited by indigenous inhabitants of İzmir somewhere between 7th century BC to the 4th century BC.
İzmir was well on its way to becoming the foremost trade center of the Ottoman Empire in the early 17th century. Commerce through the port in İzmir had a strong influence on the economy of the Ottoman Empire from the beginning of the 19th century. Today the economy of İzmir is divided between various types of activity such as: industry, transportation, communications, agriculture and of course, tourism. The province of İzmir is the third largest exporter after İstanbul and Bursa - it is the fifth largest importer.
Present day İzmir has abundant fine restaurants, cafes, shops, bars, and beautiful beaches which draw visitors from abroad as well as other Turkish cities. Well known ancient sites like Efes - site of the Temple of Artemis, Pergamum - 105 kms north of Izmir, Foça - the ancient Phocaea of the Ionians, and Balcova - a thermal center which is known as the Agamemnon Baths, and Bulbuldagi - where the house built for the Virgin Mary is located. All this and more can be experienced by visitors to İzmir arriving at İzmir Adnan Menderes International Airport.
